Kyle Bean // Materialicious

January 13, 2011

In the words of the site itself www.materialicious.com (“shelter, materials and objects”) ‘is a user-submitted visual curation site featuring modern architecture and design, craftsmanship, materials and products’.

Whilst browsing the archives of this site, I came across some quirky designs by Brighton based designer Kyle Bean. Especially liking the ‘Russian doll’ style mobile phones (reflecting the evolution of phones over the years), (built for battle) paper aeroplane and models (made for display at Liberty), which have been constructed using Hermes packaging. Good example of recycling.

Honda – Wieden+Kennedy

January 4, 2011

Honda Insight – The Making of “Let it Shine” from Honda on Vimeo.

Honda’s will always be my bike of choice (although I was partial to the KX in my youth) …

anywho, I love Honda ad campaigns, and of course they are the work of Wieden+Kennedy – I say ‘of course’, I only just discovered this, but it doesn’t surprise me, cos I usually enjoy their work.

Their TV campaign- ‘Honda Everything – ‘Everything we do’ introduced to promote the Honda Civic totally grabs me (it highlights Honda’s breadth of engineering expertise – anything from cars to quads to marine vehicles. Clever stuff). Another example (see link above)- The Making of  the ‘Let it Shine’ video offers up a brief glimpse into concepts and what goes on behind the scenes  … the level of co-ordination that goes into these kind of things is inspiring.

Artemide Tolomeo

December 11, 2010

This is what happens when engineering and design lighting concepts are fused …

Artemide (Italian lighting company founded by Ernesto Gismondi and Sergio Mazza 1958) have collaborated with a host of first class designers and architects, including Sir Norman Foster. More specifically, the Tolomeo lamp shown above was originally designed in 1989 by Architects Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina.

My desk really wants this lamp …

Into the Wild

November 17, 2010

Recently, a friend uploaded the ‘Into the Wild’ soundtrack onto my Itunes. This influenced me to rewatch the film.  Each time I watch the film  I really enjoy it … be it an re-interpretation of the truth … ahh who knows – beautiful scenery nonetheless.  Anyway, googling the film led me to this picture.  It’s an aerial photo of the exact location of the abandoned  ”Magic bus” – the location of Christopher McCandless’ death – the Stampede Trail in the Denali National Park, Alaska.  Pretty fascinating.pic9

The Selby

I love seeing pictures of people’s creative workspaces and apartments.  I consider it healthy voyeurism. The Selby is a cool site … loads of features = loads of creative spaces.  Some of the places really jump out at me, others not so much … but hey, variety being the spice of life and all.  The feature on tattoo artist Scott Campbell is an interesting one.  I grew up in a household full of stuff, so I guess I find it somewhat nostalgic and comforting seeing photos of uniquely personal living spaces (however different they are to my own experiences) … this guy appears to have a fascinating collection of bits and bobs, and several nicely stocked bookshelves. My kind of place.

Snow Fox – Yellowstone BBC2

This is … awesomely beautiful.

Earth Hour

March 29, 2009

earth-hour1

We managed to burn enough candles to keep a small candle making factory open in the Far East …the theory was to take photos and document the evening – apologies Earth Hour folks – but that fell to the wayside.  Nonetheless, buffet was simple yet effective.  Blinky Bill the hamster did what she does best …entertain/amaze the guests with her sheer size and agility.  In all seriousness, I think she has advertising potential.  She blatantly responds to her name PLUS her bar hanging skills go unrivalled.   On an environmental note, she too supports the ethos behind earth hour.  Blinky manages to hold onto her principles, whilst hanging from bars and enjoying cheese nibbles.

Earth Hour – lights off –  lights on.

The Barrage – Cardiff Bay

March 22, 2009

post-banner-220309

So, we’ve been living in the Bay for approaching 6 months, yet, despite good intent, we were yet to explore the barrage.  Just to explain (and excuse my vague knowledge), the barrage is what makes the bay the bay.  It’s an awesome little ride from the waterfront to Penarth.  Weather this weekend has been unusually good. The sun was out … which subsequently brought out the boats … which also brought out the cyclists and walkers.  Took a few photos.  Discovered a perfect late evening picnic spot by the water edge.  We have so much yet to discover in this City.  Exciting.

Lars and the Real Girl

post-lars-230309

I have been meaning to refer to Lars and the real girl for several weeks.  I appreciate, I may have missed the boat slightly with this film (release date October 2007 – rented it through Lovefilm few months ago), but nonetheless, I still feel a somewhat powerful (yet unspoken) duty to buy it and subsequently pass it around to my friends in order to spread its ‘love’.
